How to be Safe while Cheerleading

Safe Cheerleading In the past, cheerleading meant waving pom-poms to keep the crowd cheering to their favorite team. However, cheerleading has changed and has become a little bit more physical with more daring routines. Cheerleading requires athletics ability as well as intricate skills. Cheerleaders are sometimes subjected to great danger which can cause them serious injuries. So what are some of the ways to remain safe while cheerleading?

Before any cheerleading event or practice, cheerleaders are highly advised to stretch and warm up. This will eventually reduce by a big percentage the chances of getting injured. Therefore, before you hit the ground, do a little warm up and plenty of stretching.

Proper dressing is a very important component of safe cheerleading. Wear good athletic sneakers that provide plenty of support and traction. Be sure to dress appropriately for the weather. On hot days, your uniform should be fairly loose and allow air to circulate around your body easily. Don’t forget the sunscreen! On cold days, it’s better to dress warm which will decrease chances of pulled muscles and/or frost bite. Use common sense.

Given the vigorous nature of the activity be sure to drink plenty of water. Due to heat exhaustion, your body runs out of water very fast and you need to replace all the fluid you have lost through sweating. Do not wait until you feel thirsty to run for your drinking bottle. Keep hydrating yourself.

Safe CheerleadingCheerleading is all about teamwork. In that respect, communication is key. You should perfect all the verbal cues to makes it easy for everyone to master the timing and commands. This is one perfect way of avoiding injuries as any communication hitches may lead to lack of coordination.

Take time to practice routines or falls until everyone has perfected the art of positioning and timing. Though it may sound boring, having a solid skill ground to work from will enhance your confidence thereby minimizing the chances of getting injured.

Just like any other activity, safety should be the top priority for all involved in cheerleading. While some accidents are unfortunate, most of them can be avoided easily by observing all the above stated safety measures.

Be safe, be fit and have fun.
